Publisher’s Mission (Issue 2)
By Racine Hiet

LUV4ALL: Mother Earth Warns! Wake Up Your COMPASSION

Cece, a rescued pig. All living beings deserve to be loved and to live free.

Until we, the human collective, fully awaken–from within our hearts–to acknowledge the Absolute Truth that we are One with ALL Life, ONLY then can we ensure the survival of Mother Earth and her Universal Family.

To evolve to the inner consciousness of ONENESS means living with the full understanding that ALL Life is sacred and must be treated that way.

ONLY then can we bring our normalized violence–which separates and targets any being, human or nonhuman, deemed “NOT LIKE US” and therefore, “LESS THAN US–to an end.

ONLY then can sustainable social change take place–in our outer world–to ensure that institutionally oppressed INDIVIDUAL lives matter. To transform systematic racism, sexism, heterosexism, speciesism, transphobia, etc., we, the human collective, must now awaken within us a new COMPASSION for ALL that will reflect an inclusive culture, honouring the interconnectedness of life. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. ” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
By Racine Hiet

Part One:

I have a riddle for you.  What do Abraham Lincoln, Charles Darwin, Mark Twain, Leonardo da Vinci, Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King–and many other free thinkers from our history, her story now forgotten, such as Anna Kingsford, Margaret Damer Dawson–all have in common?

They were all vegan/vegetarians!

With the Union of Concerned Scientists now urgently letting us know that the future for all life on Earth depends on human beings finding a way to stop destroying and live in harmony with all life, few subjects address so directly the heart of our challenge as that of veganism.  For veganism is more than a diet; it is an ethic by which to live.

Vegans aim to do the least harm possible by not eating or wearing animals and not supporting companies that exploit them in laboratories, entertainment, factory farms, and the leather, fur, silk, and many other industries.  This attitude of kindness extends to human beings as well and does not support sweatshops and the many other forms of human exploitation.  Astrology, Native and other religious prophecies, and many futurists say that we are being given an unprecedented opportunity to evolve as a species to become a peaceful, nurturing, creative presence on the planet.  Veganism, as an ideal, encompasses all creation with its awareness of the interconnected and Oneness of all. A Plant Based Journey To Health Recovery
By Sheanne Moskaluk

My name is Sheanne Moskaluk.  I live in Naramata, British Columbia, Canada, and, along with my husband Dan, we have experienced changes in our lives that we never would have believed possible.   We started by changing our minds and the rest followed.

In 2010, my 14 year old son became interested in weight lifting and body building.  He joined a local gym, where he was told he would never put on muscle if he did not consume protein powders and lots of meat.  So, being what I thought was a good mother, off to the local health food store I went.  What happened next would drastically change our lives. As I was browsing the selection of whey protein, a sales clerk inquired “was I buying this for myself?”  I explained it was for my son, to which she quickly replied “you need to do some research before giving that to your kids”. Heal the Climate? Heal the System. An Interview with Sailesh Rao
By Victoria Moran

I’ve had the wonderful opportunity recently to spend time and absorb a bit of the brilliance of systems engineer Sailesh Rao, PhD, who spent most of his career developing a little thing we’re all familiar with: the Internet! When Dr. Rao, a lifelong vegetarian, learned about the climate/agriculture connection, he went vegan immediately and left his high-status engineering position to devote himself full time to saving this planet. He founded  ClimateHealers.org and has joined the production teams of several vegan documentaries, including Cowspiracy, What the Health, and A Prayer for Compassion, set to debut in October. Violet’s Vegan Comics for Small Children and Big Kids
By Violet Plum and daughter Miranda Lemon

“Your creations are such inspirations for children, parents, and teachers everywhere!  What an original and substantial way to make people, and children, of all kinds, feel the same and come together for a greater purpose.  Kudos to you ladies, what a positive impact on our society!!”    Sabra Anne October 2016

“I want to let you know how much I appreciate the safe reading space you provide for the younger set.  This dad feels 100% confident in the content of your works, and my child just gobbles up every word.  Please continue your excellent work, and we’ll keep reading.”   KeithDecember  2017

Violet’s Vegan Comics began six years ago as a result of my own love of adventure comics growing up.  When I was, I don’t know, about ten years old, I would eagerly await the landing of Tammy & Misty comics on the doormat every week.  I love a good story.  Something exciting, gripping, suspenseful; something with intrigue; something funny; something engrossing. Nation Rising
By Sheanne Moskaluk

Hear some Passionate Highlights of the The Nation Rising 2018 Protest Speeches and Interviews at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada.

https://www.facebook.com/nationrisingcanada/videos/252079142071383/

This past July, Dan and I flew east to our hometown of Ottawa, Ontario.  Dan was born in Ottawa and I had moved there with my family when I was in Grade 2.  We grew up in the same neighbourhood, met and got married in Ottawa in 1989, before starting our life together in British Columbia.  So while all of that history might have been enough to lure us back for a visit 29 years later, we made the journey for a reason much bigger than ourselves.

Sheanne and Dan Moskaluk in front of the Peace Tower.

On July 14th, we had the privilege of participating in the first annual Nation Rising March and Rally.  Dan and I, along with 500 other Canadians, marched through the streets of downtown Ottawa, arriving on Parliament Hill.  At the foot of the Peace Tower, we all delivered a list of demands to our Federal government: Read more

The Animal Protection Party of Canada: Featuring Jordan Reichert
By Jordan Reichert

image: Brodie Frehlich Photography. Led by Liz White, the Animal Protection Party of Canada (APPC) is Canada’s only federal political party that gives the animals and the environment a political voice – the powerful, national voice needed to secure protection for all animals and the environment. Jordan Reichert is the APPC West Coast Campaign Officer. Vote for Jordan Reichert October 20th for Victoria Council. A win in a municipality will have positive ramifications far beyond the city, since many federal and provincial legislators begin their careers at the municipal level. Jordan’s work as a Victoria city councillor would show voters across Canada that legislators like Jordan can both advance animal and environmental protection issues and be tireless advocates of the best kind for the constituents. See his platform of public policy that reflects the values, needs, and diversity of Victoria here.

The Animal Protection Party of Canada is committed to the promotion and adherence to veganism. All of our team is vegan as are a great number of supporters. However, you don’t have to be vegan to support us. We are an inclusive political party that is just as dedicated to being compassionate and welcoming to those who are not vegan as we are to the animals whose interests we have in mind when expressing vegan values. This Ban On Vegan ‘Meat’ Labeling Sets A Dangerous Precedent (It’s Also Hypocritical)
By Katrina Fox

This is an excerpt of “This Ban On Vegan ‘Meat’ Labeling Sets A Dangerous Precedent (It’s Also Hypocritical)” article by Katrina Fox written for FORBES magazine. For full article please click here.

This week a law came into effect in Missouri which bans the use of ‘meat’ terminology to describe any food products that haven’t come from a slaughtered animal.

It means that vegan brands could face imprisonment or a fine of up to $1,000 if they use words like ‘sausage’ or ‘hot dog’ on their packaging or describe their products as plant-based ‘meat’.

The new law was supported by the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, which earlier this year cited consumer confusion as justification for the restrictive labeling. It also admitted its support was based on “protecting the integrity of the products [my emphasis] that farm and ranch families throughout the country work hard to raise each and every day”. Vegan Physique Transformation: From 27 Eggs and 1.5 lbs of Turkey a Day to Plant-Based Overnight
By Christopher McKinnon

Ever since I hit puberty, due to cultural conditioning; mass opinion, taste, convenience and tradition, I ate as many animal products as I could fit in my stomach.  I heard that was “how you built muscle.” This lifestyle consisted of, for my junior college year before going vegan, eating 27 eggs, a pound a half a ground turkey, multiple glasses of milk and several cups of shredded cheese a day.  I believed that animal protein was an essential building block, not only for human life itself, but for the goals I had regarding my physical development. Raising Vegan Kids in a Non-Vegan World
By Julia Feliz Brueck

The Baby and Toddler Vegan Feeding Guide  by Julia Feliz Brueck is a to-the-point guide for parents looking to raise their little ones safely on plant-based diets. Evidence-based information and dietitian approved! Book trailer below.

Raising a vegan child in a very non-vegan world is certainly no easy task – not because it’s not doable. Remaining strong in one of the most vulnerable times in our lives because of the pressure to conform to what the majority of society deems we should do is no easy feat.

I’ve now been in the midst of raising two little vegans since conception for over four years. Early into that journey and years later I still feel confident that:

“One of the best and most important decisions I have made is choosing to raise both my sons with vegan values. As a vegan of almost a decade, I want to pass on the same values that have made me question my everyday life choices and choose to make my impact on other living beings as small as possible. Apart from helping them develop a connection to other living beings, the most natural way to help them start their own vegan journey is through what they eat. Read more

Gary Smith Rescues Beagles from Medical Labs
By Chloe Falkenheim

Why are you vegan? Why do you promote veganism? Why is vegan activism important?
I am vegan because I believe that all beings, human and nonhuman, are entitled to a life free of oppression and exploitation, and a life of bodily integrity and moral agency. I promote veganism because I believe that what is and has been happening to nonhuman animals for thousands of years for food, clothing, entertainment and research is wrong, it is immoral. I promote veganism because most people are either unconscious or don’t care about the brutality done to animals in our names, and someone, such as myself and other vegans and animal activists, are obligated to be active for them. Vegan activism is important because it takes our attention and focus off of our own selfish and individual needs and lives, and puts it on helping those being oppressed and exploited. Living a moral and ethical life requires speaking up and doing whatever we can do to change the situation for nonhuman animals. Read more

Dominika Piasecka – My Life As An Activist
By Vegan Life Magazine

Dominika Piasecka Talks About Her Life As A Vegan Activist And Shares Her Stories From The Front Line Of Demonstrations Across The UK.

For many vegans, eradicating animal products from their diet and lifestyle is simply not enough in the effort to save animals from pain and suffering. Even after fully committing to veganism in 2012, student and campaigner Dominika Piasecka felt as though she could, and should, be doing more. She told Vegan Life: “I didn’t want to be a person who was content with how things currently are, so I turned to animal rights. We must actively intervene to stop violence, not just say we don’t want to participate in it.”

After initially getting involved with animal rights and campaigning when she was still a vegetarian, Dominika was encouraged to watch a speech by activist Gary Yourosfky, and was instantly hooked on the idea of veganism.

“Every single sentence he said made sense to me, and veganism became logical. I watched the whole speech and excluded cow’s milk from my diet right away. I could not believe that I was living a lie for so many years – I had no idea about the dairy and egg industries and in the past I never understood why people became vegan.” Read more

The Magic Rabbit
By Angel Flinn

Yesterday, while staying in my home town of Wellington, New Zealand, I visited an historic house constructed in the 1800s. The ‘Colonial Cottage’ had housed children and grandchildren of the original settlers who built it, until it was bequeathed to the city in the 1960s.

As we came down a set of narrow steps and through an old wooden door, our guide informed us that we were now stepping into the ‘wet kitchen’. In the next few moments, I was about to find myself face to face with a dead rabbit, his perfectly preserved body hanging from the ceiling as part of the educational tour.

I’ve written about rabbits before, once when teenaged Petland employee Elizabeth Carlisle killed two of them and was vilified as a perpetrator of animal abuse, and once when NPR celebrated the history of a restaurant famous with local diners for a menu that revolved around rabbit meat. An example of our society’s confusion about animal ethics? I believe so. Read more

Dr. Nandita Shah: The Food We Are Conditioned To Eat Is Making Us Sick
By Dr. Nandita Shah

Having trained as a homeopath, and being a homeopath at heart, I’m always looking at things from a holistic point of view. As homeopaths, we see a patient as a whole, and disease as a result of problems at the level of body, mind, and spirit together. Homeopathy is based on Nature’s laws and requires a practitioner to have a very deep insight into everything connected with nature, the state of the human mind and, of course, medical knowledge of the human body. Homeopathy, to my mind, is a process of growth of mind and body, to reach a higher spiritual purpose.  As a homeopath, I was fascinated with the connection between nature and the human mind and body. Patients would get better miraculously if their remedy were clearly found. To take a medical case and to find the right remedy was exhilarating. Read more

Dr. Orestes Gutierrez on Diabetes Mellitus Type 2: Cause and Holistic Treatment
By Dr. Orestes Gutierrez

According to the CDC, by 2050 an astounding 1 out of 3 Americans may have diabetes.  Furthermore, CDC statistics show 29.1 million people or 9.3% of the population have diabetes in the United States. This article will summarize ways to prevent and reverse diabetes type 2 and prediabetes. The tools to accomplish this are in your hands! Through dietary habits and maintaining an appropriate weight, an individual can prevent and even reverse diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) is a condition of abnormal blood sugar metabolism.  The word diabetes comes from greek root meaning “passing through”.  The word mellitus comes from the Latin root meaning “honey-sweet”.   Diabetes mellitus literally means “passing through” the urine “honey-sweet”.  Indeed, in ancient times that is how physicians diagnosed diabetes, namely, by tasting the sweet urine of patients that were very sick. Vegan Food Tours Help You Find The Best Plant-Based Food In Europe
By Tanya Flink Senior Editor of LIVEKINDLY

Making travel plans? Don’t go it alone. Vegan Food Tours offers one-of-a-kind walking tours throughout four of Europe’s top destination cities. Each tour is curated to highlight the best local cuisine that truly represents the tastes and cultures of the city, and it is all plant-based. LIVEKINDLY had the opportunity to sit down with one of the founders, Sergi Galiano, to talk travel tips and learn more about the incredible vegan eats of Europe.

Vegan Food Tours began in 2017 to help people “discover the culture one bite at a time.” The vegan founders started with four cities – Barcelona, London, Rome, and Amsterdam – and curated three-hour tours which included their favorite vegan eateries in each city. Galiano promises that each guest is truly getting the local experience. Between himself and his co-founder, Fabio Bianchetti, the two have lived and/or extensively traveled in all of these cities. Chloe Falkenheim, Young Animal Activist and Founder of VegYouth
By Chloe Falkenheim

Hi, I’m Chloe, the founder of VegYouth. I started VegYouth when I was 16 years old and in the eleventh grade (in August 2013).

Path to veganism:

My story dates back to when I was 3 years old. I had just finished watching the movie Chicken Run and came to the shocking revelation that chicken indeed does come from chickens. I put away the thought for some time.

This thought resurfaced when I was 6 years old, when a book of fun facts about pigs sparked on obsession of them. I read Charlotte’s Web, fiction books about pigs, and one where the main character was a pig who did not want to be slaughtered as well as many other pig books and movies. I decided to never eat pork again, even though my family never ate pork anyway, so this obsession did not really change my eating habits. I also like to say that I became an activist when I was six, because I cried whenever anyone even talked about eating pork and even wanted to start a pig appreciation club. Read more

Okanagan Health Forum: Conference on Health & Fitness Powered By Plants 23rd of September 2018
By Shauna Gardiner

Yesterday was a fabulous day and this morning I woke up feeling as if I could change the world!  I attended the Health & Fitness, Empowered by Plants day of education in Penticton.  It was put on by the Okanagan Health Forum, which is a group organized in 2005 to provide cutting-edge research in lifestyle medicine to health care professionals and the general public.  It was also formed to “bring internationally acclaimed authorities on plant-based diets to inspire and motivate our residents to make choices that support exceptional health and well-being”.

Well, that they sure did! They had a professional line up of plant-based speakers covering topics ranging from how to heal yourself from lifestyle diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes and cancer, to the plant-based diet of a world class athlete and stories of how changing to a plant-based diet helped a couple from Naramata, BC overcome obesity and stage 4 kidney cancer.
